Frequently Asked Questions

Individual & Couples Therapy in Connecticut

Getting Started

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

Therapy can be helpful at many points in life. If you’re struggling in your relationship, finding yourself feeling anxious or depressed, or there are aspects of your life—work, friendships, family relationships, or partnerships—you’d like to be different than they are, therapy may be able to help you gain clarity, develop greater self-understanding, and make changes in the areas that matter to you.

What happens during the first session?

Whether you are beginning individual or couples therapy, the first session is an opportunity to understand the concerns that brought you into therapy. It is also a chance for us to get a feel for each other. The most important part of therapy is the relationship you have with your therapist. More than any intervention or treatment modality, it is the relationship.

I will also use the first session to determine whether my training and expertise are a good match for your needs. If for some reason they aren't, I will help connect you with a provider who is.

How do I get started?

To get started, you can reach out to me directly by phone at (860) 690-1206. This is a confidential line. You can also schedule using the calendar link in the footer of this site or reach out through the contact page, and I will get back to you.

I am very responsive and usually get back to you within 24 hours.

Do you offer consultations?

Yes, I do offer consultations upon request. You can schedule a 30 minute FREE consultation in the calendar link or reach out via my contact page.

How often do we meet?

I usually recommend weekly sessions to start, both to establish a foundation for the therapy and to build momentum. Meeting more frequently at the beginning of therapy can help you begin working with the concerns that brought you in and start experiencing relief sooner. That progress can be motivating and can help create a strong foundation for the work moving forward.

As therapy progresses, we can talk together about whether weekly sessions continue to make sense or whether a different frequency would better support your needs.

Virtual Therapy

Do you offer virtual therapy?

Yes, I offer virtual therapy. My practice is exclusively online through a secure telehealth platform.

Where do you provide therapy?

I am currently licensed to provide therapy in Connecticut. I am also pursuing licensure in New York and PSYPACT authorization, which would allow me to provide telepsychology services in participating PSYPACT states once approved.

Can I participate in therapy from anywhere in Connecticut?

Yes. As long as you are physically located in Connecticut at the time of your session, you can participate in therapy from anywhere in the state.

What do I need for a virtual session?

You will need a device with internet access, a camera, and a microphone. While therapy can be provided by phone in some circumstances, being able to see you—and your partner, if you are pursuing couples therapy—is an important part of the therapeutic process. I recommend joining sessions from a private, quiet space where you can speak openly and comfortably.

Fees & Insurance

Do you accept insurance?

I accept insurance through Headway and Alma for individual therapy and family work specific to addiction. You can check your benefits and schedule directly (Headway, Alma).

I do not accept insurance for couples therapy, however, if you'd like to use your out of network (ONN) benefits I am happy to prepare a superbill so that you may submit for reimbursement.

What are your fees?

If you pay privately or choose to use your out of network (ONN) benefits, my fees are $200 for individual therapy (60 minutes) and $300 for couples and therapy (90-minutes).

If you use insurance, the fee is contracted between the insurance company and Headway/Alma. You are responsible for a copay if that is applicable for your plan. Your financial responsibility will be clearly outlined when you check your benefits through Headway or Alma, or you can call your insurance company directly for your exact copayment amount for behavioral health billing codes.

Do you provide a superbill?

I am happy to prepare and provide a superbill upon request. Doing so requires me to include a diagnostic code for the identified patient, or the person for whom insurance is being billed. The diagnostic code becomes part of your medical record. We can discuss the pros and cons of this if you have additional questions.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel an appointment, I ask that you do so at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled date and time. In the case of serious illness/injury or other emergency, exceptions may be made. Because your appointment time is held exclusively for you, if you do not provide 24 hours notice of cancellation you will be charged the full fee.

About Therapy

How long does therapy take?

The length of therapy depends on several factors, including what you're hoping to work on, the complexity of what you're experiencing, and the level of support you need. Your preferences and how you want to use therapy are also important considerations.

You can decide at any time to pause or stop therapy if you choose. When complex trauma is present, the course of treatment is often longer because there may be more to work through and integrate.

Some people find that the support and growth that come from therapy continue to be helpful over several years, even as the frequency of sessions decreases over time. You may eventually choose to attend monthly or even quarterly to maintain the gains you've made, with more frequent sessions during periods of high stress, significant life transitions, or when additional support is needed.

Therapy doesn't have to follow a predetermined timeline. We can adjust the frequency and focus of our work as your needs change.

What can I expect from therapy?

Therapy is a space to be heard, felt, and understood. Compassion and curiosity are key elements of the experience with me.

We will begin by talking about what you're struggling with, what you want to work on, and what you're hoping will be different as a result of therapy. Together, we'll develop a treatment plan with specific objectives to help you move toward those goals.

Often, clients bring in current difficulties or problems. We explore what is happening, the emotions surrounding it, and the meaning you may be making of the experience. We may also explore how what is happening in the present connects with earlier life experiences.

What is happening now can bring up unresolved pain from the past, blending past and present in ways that can create confusion or lead to reactions that feel bigger than the situation itself. Therapy slows down that process so you can understand what is happening, gain clarity, and have greater choice in how you respond to your experiences and your relationships.

You will always have choice when it comes to the work we do in the room. I check in regularly about how the experience is feeling for you, and my assessments, interventions, and exploratory questions are invitations rather than demands.

For many people, therapy becomes one of the first places where they feel truly seen and able to be authentic.

If you're coming for couples therapy and wondering what to expect from the first session, you can read more about it in [this blog post].

What if I'm not sure whether individual or couples therapy is right for me?

It's okay if you're not sure. We can schedule an initial consultation to talk about what's happening, what you're hoping to address, and what kind of support would be most helpful.

Sometimes individual therapy makes the most sense. Other times, working together as a couple is the better place to begin. We can talk through your concerns and determine what feels like the best fit for where you are right now.
